J&K-born speedster Umran Malik likely to replace Mohammed Shami for T20I series against SA

Hopes for an international comeback have glimmered for Umran Malik after BCCI put the speedster on standby as Mohammed Shami’s availability looks doubtful for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa.

Shami tested COVID-19 positive just before the three-match T20I series against Australia. The board and selectors are not ready to take any risk.

A BCCI official told InsideSport: “I am not exactly aware of the current situation about Shami and his fitness. The medical team will have the details about it.”

Interestingly, Umran Malik earned his maiden India call-up against the Proteas in June.

The 22-year-old youngster played in two T20I series against Ireland and England before being left out of the squad.

Earlier, he became the youngest player to take 20 wickets in any IPL season. Umran Malik took his tally to 21 during a match-winning spell for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. He broke Jasprit Bumrah’s 2017 record.
